Hundreds of Bay Area artists will open their studios to visitors in the coming weeks as part of San Francisco arts nonprofit Artspan’s annual open studio series.
The series kicked off Thursday evening, Oct. 19, with a show of 270 pieces from Bay Area artists at the SOMArts Cultural Center that was part exhibition — most works were for sale — and part celebration of the city’s post-pandemic creative renaissance.
“We are defying the doom loop narrative,” said Joen Madonna, Artspan’s executive director. “None of us are giving up on San Francisco. We are San Francisco.”
The gallery show is free and runs through Nov. 19.
Artists’ studios around San Francisco will open their doors to the public for the next four weekends as part of the free series, currently in its 49th year. It is a showcase for the city’s vibrant art scene and a chance for visitors to support artists, whether or not they buy a piece, Madonna said.
Nick Maltagliati, Artspan’s program and membership manager, encouraged members of the public to visit the artists’ studios as a way to “give back to the people who make our region unique.”
“Visiting artists in their spaces erases the boundaries and makes art more accessible,” said Maltagliati, who is also an abstract landscape painter.
Participating artists are clustered together by neighborhood, with different studios opening each weekend. Artspan’sonline guide每个艺术家的目录,ir studio locations and hours visitors are accepted.
