According to the museum website, Duncanson was born in Seneca County, N.Y., in either 1821 or 1822. He lived in Cincinnati for much of his life and was supported by abolitionists who bought his paintings and sponsored his trip to Europe to study Old Master works. The artist’s vision of rural, bucolic America as a kind of Arcadia or paradise is a characteristic feature of his work, said to represent a late hope for peace before the onset of Civil War.

In the context of the 2020 election and turmoil brought to the country by the coronavirus, political division and the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, the painting seems to symbolize a fresh start for the country under the Biden administration, no doubt a consideration when Jill Biden selected it.
