Exclusive: ‘Faith Ringgold: American People’ to make West Coast debut in S.F. this summer

The retrospective, currently on view at New York’s New Museum, will span more than 50 years of Ringgold’s career and include nearly 100 objects. Among them will be paintings, performance ephemera, materials related to her children’s books, and textile works.

Janna Keegan, assistant curator of contemporary art and programming for Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, called Ringgold “one of the artists very active in creating a visual vocabulary for the African Diaspora, (who was) looking towards African art to really inspire her.”

Examples of the artist’s famed story quilts, which have been celebrated for their use of African and African American craft traditions to depict Black narratives, will be prominently featured, Keegan added. Subjects of Ringgold’s quilts have included themes as expansive as the social conditions of racism and notions of community as well as personal episodes like her struggles as a working mother and political activist.

Among the quilts Keegan is excited to have on display is “Tar Beach,” which inspired Ringgold’s 1991 children’s book of the same name. The quilt is the first in her “Woman on a Bridge” series and will be on loan from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

To date, Ringgold has written and illustrated 17 books, most of which touch on similar themes of identity and prejudice as her visual art. Keegan said that Ringgold, a longtime educator, has actively sought out young audiences “because she sees children as a potential for revolutionary change.”

Ringgold, now based in New Jersey, was born into the 1930s Harlem cultural scene and has long engaged with Black political and social subjects in her work. In her 1963 painting series “American People,” she portrayed themes of struggle during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Her related 1967 work, “The Flag Is Bleeding,” remains one of her most iconic images, with the piece showing a Black man holding his hand over a chest wound next to two white figures. It will be included in the exhibition.

From 1967 to 1969, she also painted works in what she called the “Black Light” series, which challenged the use of white pigments as the basis in most painting. The series used shades of black and darker hues as the base for images, many of which demonstrated her interest in African masks and other traditions.

Masks are also a key element in Ringgold’s performance art practice, which includes the works “The Wake” and “Resurrection of the Bicentennial Negro.”

“As an artist, author, educator and organizer, Faith Ringgold is one of the most influential cultural figures of her generation, inspiring young artists working today through her decades of activism and action,” Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco CEO Thomas P. Campbell said in a statement.
