There’s yet another immersive artist-inspired light show in town.
“Immersive Frida Kahlo” opens Saturday, March 12, at SVN West San Francisco, with projections of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s paintings accompanied by biographic presentations and original music. Like other flashy art exhibits staged outside museums, the tickets range from the surprisingly expensive off-peak price of $39.99 to a $109.99 VIP ticket that comes with an “Immersive Frida cushion” for your posterior.

Mara P. Kahlo and her daughter, Mara De Anda, descendants of Frida’s sister Cristina and officers of the Fundación Familia Kahlo, told The Chronicle they hope “Immersive Frida” might alter public perception of their forebear from her image as “Sufrida” (the sufferer) Kahlo, to a “happy, empowered woman” who was warm with her family.
Speaking with The Chronicle via a recent video interview from her home in Mexico City, De Anda expressed the hope that the exhibition will be an uplifting experience for people who, whether they appreciate her great-great-aunt’s paintings or not, can find inspiration in her life.
“We have inside ourselves a Frida, no matter what,” De Anda said. “We all have this empowerment and this strength, you know, and we just have to pull it out, just like Frida did.”
Kahlo’s life certainly required endurance. The major episodes of her life, many of which are represented in her painfully personal paintings, can be recited by people who have only a passing interest in art.
She was born in 1907 to her father’s second wife, who banished Kahlo’s stepsisters from the home. A childhood bout of polio left her with a pronounced limp. At 18 years old, a trolley accident impaled her with an iron handrail, shattering her pelvis. Her boyfriend abandoned her during her convalescence. Complications from the injuries persisted for the rest of her life.

The exhibit sidesteps these topics. In fact, while Kevin Kopjak, publicist for Lighthouse Immersive, said that “some of the works featured include her personal reflections and experience with her miscarriages and fertility challenges,” he admits that “nothing explicitly touches on these subjects.”
