The Contemporary Jewish Museumis scheduled to reopen to members on Oct. 15 and will be open to the general public on Oct. 17. Like theFine Arts Museums of San Francisco, SFMOMA and the Asian Art Museum, the CJM will be implementing new safety precautions and will only be operating at 25% capacity.
“We are very excited to welcome our Members and guests back into the Contemporary JewishMuseum in a way that is safe for both visitors and staff,” said CJM Executive Director Lori Starr in a statement.“The architecture of the CJM itself is inspiring and welcoming, and is naturally suited to allow for comfortable physical distancing between groups of people.
“We opened two highly-anticipated exhibitions shortly before we had to close due to the pandemic, and are eager to share these wonderful shows with our visitors, in the hope that they will offer a respite from the many challenges people are facing right now.”
The CJM’s new hours will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday-Sunday.
In addition to capacity restrictions, the museum willrequire that face coverings be worn and encourages people to book reservations in advance. Visitors will also be required to maintain physical distance while in the space.
The museum has increased cleaning services andupdated its HVAC and ventilation systems.
The Wise Sons cafe will also reopen, but will restrict service to takeout and outdoor dining.
While open, the CJMplans to continuevirtual programming, likeits popular “Sunday Stories” lectures that stream onFacebookandIGTV.
Upon reopening, the museum will also premiere “Predicting the Past: Zohar Studios, The Lost Years,” featuring artist Stephen Berkman’s immersive photography installation in tribute to mythical 19th century Jewish immigrant photographer Shimmel Zohar, founder of Zohar Studios.
Previously mounted exhibitions “Levi Strauss: A History of American Style” and “Threads of Jewish Life: Ritual and Other Textiles from the San Francisco Bay Area” have both been extended through early 2021.
