The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has received a major gift from the estate of San Francisco philanthropists and art collectorsNorman StoneandNorah Sharpe Stone。In one of the most significant gifts in the institution’s 87-year history, nearly 350 works by artists including Marcel Duchamp, Diane Arbus, Carrie Mae Weems, Jeff Koons, Danh Vo, Sarah Lucas, Bruce Nauman, Hans Bellmer and Ai Weiwei will become part of the museum’s permanent holdings, SFMOMA announced Thursday, March 3.

“They had been very clear that they wanted to keep their collection intact as much as possible,” Amy Stone, Norman’s daughter, told The Chronicle. “They had a strong commitment to SFMOMA, and they had a deep conviction that art made a difference in their lives. We talked a lot about how as a collector, you’re a custodian for a piece and that it belongs eventually in the hands of the public.”

A $10 million unrestricted bequest by the Stones, who both died at age 81 just 19 months apart from each other, is also part of the gift. The Norah and Norman Stone Fund for Exhibitions of Contemporary Art will be dedicated to supporting future contemporary art exhibitions and collection displays.

Bishop说:“从石材收藏中的作品增加了SFMOMA的股份的深度和广度。”“I’m thinking in particular of artists, most of whom emerged in the 1980s or early 1990s and went on to become among the most important artists of their generation, such as Matthew Barney, Cady Noland, Sherrie Levine, Jeff Koons, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Larry Clark.”

这些石头在艺术界和SFMOMA的狂热支持者中都是众所周知的。诺曼(Norman)于1991年成为博物馆受托人,并一直担任该职位,直到2021年去世。

Norah Stone worked as a corporate attorney before marrying Norman in 1986. The couple began collecting art in the 1980s.
