The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art plans to host a free community day next month in celebration of the opening of the new exhibition “Diego Rivera’s America.”
The event, set for July 17, is expected to feature music and dance performances curated by San Francisco nonprofitAcción Latina, an artisan craft market, and a lowrider car showcase on Third Street. Local artists Lauren Rose D’Amato and Derek Holguin’s digital mural installation will also be on display, featuring music by Mission District native and femmetón singer-songwriterLa Doña.
A special screening of the short documentary “Aqui Estamos,” which focuses on the femme artists in the muralism movement, begins at 11 a.m. in the Phyllis Wattis Theater on the museum’s first floor.
Rivera, whose murals earned him worldwide fame, is one of the best-known Mexican artists of the 20th century. His mural “Pan American Unity,” created in 1940 — the same year he remarried fellow Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in San Francisco — is currently on exhibition for free at SFMOMA.
“迭戈里维拉的美国”是第一个新exhibition of the artist in more than two decades and makes use of SFMOMA’s extensive collection of Rivera’s works. Timed reservations are required to view the exhibition.
