Among the largest landscape works ever painted by the late Bay Area Figurative painter, it’s one of the lots in the auction house’s Spring Marquee Week 20th Century Evening Sale happening in New York City on May 12. The sale, now in its third season, will also include work by文森特 - 梵高,Pablo Picasso,Willem de Kooning和Andy Warhol.
“To our knowledge it is the only triptych of his to come to auction,” Ellanor Notides, Christie’s West Coast chairman, told The Chronicle of “City Views.”
This will be the first time the triptych, which was painted over the course of several months in 2003-04, has ever been for sale.
“His work provided a glimpse into the secrets of San Francisco life, much as our science helps shed light on human biology,” said Deepak Srivastava, president of Gladstone Institutes. “We are excited to continue honoring him, his legacy, and his love of mentoring by using the sale proceeds to establish a new fund that will support the next generations of young scientists.”
Thiebaud, Sacrame在长期的家中去世nto in December at age 101, is seen as one of the most significant Northern California artists of his lifetime, with a career that spanned the 1950s to 2020s. Known for his heavy pigmentation, bold color choices and use of shadow, he frequently elevated common objects in his work like gumball machines, paint cans and desserts, which caused some to identify him with the Pop Art movement.
Notides called “City Views” a culmination of several major areas in Thiebaud’s body of work, which include his depiction of landscapes and cityscapes, his use of clouds and street scenes.
“If you look at the picture, you can see that Wayne added onto it,” said Notides, who first met the artist in 1992. “Wayne was not one to leave something sitting. There’s little dashes and dots of color and little sort of cream spots that almost referenced his ice cream cones.”
The current sale price estimate by Christie’s is between $10 million and $15 million. That figure, Notides said, is based not only on the size of the work and quality, but also by considering recent sale prices for other paintings by the artist. In 2021, Thiebaud’s 1968 painting “Toweling Off,” showing a woman wiping her face, was sold by the auction house for $8.4 million.
Gladstone Institutes, which has been the only owner of “City Views,” plans to use the proceeds of the sale to create a dedicated fund to support scientific training and mentoring programs.
“The Gladstone Institutes has made the very difficult decision to sell a work because it’s expensive for them to hold onto. But at the same time they’re supporting the artist’s mission,” said Notides. “Wayne was really about the next generation, about education. What they’re able to do is to sell a work which will benefit their future residents, their future Ph.D. program and allow them to be able to come to San Francisco and study and do research with the institutes.”
Throughout his seven-decade career, Thiebaud also painted portraits, although his landscapes and cityscapes, frequently depicting Northern California, are now significant areas in his overall body of work.
“Teaching at the university became my education.”
