Mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili has withdrawn from the San Francisco Opera’s season-opening production of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore,” citing personal reasons.
女中音埃克aterina Semenchuk will sing the role of Azucena instead, the company announced Wednesday. Aug. 23.
Semenchuk, a Belarusian artist who trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, made a powerful San Francisco Opera debut in 2015 in Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” and returned the following season for Verdi’s “Aida.” In 2018, she gave a forceful performance as Santuzza in Mascagni’s one-act opera “Cavalleria Rusticana.”
Rachvelishvili made a whirlwind company debut in the title role of Bizet’s “Carmen” in 2011 but has not been heard here since. The Georgian artist has had a series of cancellations during the past two years — including recent ones in Germany, Italy and France — which she has attributed to health problems.
In a JulyInstagram post, Rachvelishvili wrote, “I was very sick! I’ve had [a] very very difficult last couple of years! My health was getting worse and I tried to stay strong and keep going, for my family, for our Little angel, for Opera and for love that I have for what I do…I will tell you my story as soon as possible and we will talk a lot about all the issues that a woman can have doing what we do!”
