At Mountain Play, theater audiences can go ‘Into the Woods’ — literally

Mountain Play produces shows at Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre, nestled in Mount Tamalpais.

的心脏rect time for revisiting James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” is always.

Somehow, the 1987 musical about fairy tale characters seems to know exactly what you need to hear. Maybe it’s the overall concept, that even if you don’t get a happily-ever-after ending, there is still meaning and comfort to be wrung from life. Or maybe it’s one gleaming gem of a lyric: “Into the woods, each time you go, there’s more to learn of what you know.”

At Mountain Play’s production, which kicks off the Bay Area’s outdoor summer theatergoing season, audiences themselves can go into the woods. One traditional way to reach Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre, which is nestled 2,000 feet above sea level, on Mount Tamalapais, is on foot (approximately seven miles from Mill Valley) orby bicycle.

When the Baker’s wife sings of “just a trick of the woods, just a moment, one peculiar passing moment,” Mountain Play’s spectacular natural surroundings might well make their presence known.

"Into the Woods": 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28. Through June 18. $25-$50. Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre, Easy Grade Trail, Mill Valley. 415-383-1100.www.mountainplay.org
