A new traveling exhibition titled the“Monumental Tour”comes to two locations in Oakland this spring, featuring works by acclaimed artists Hank Willis Thomas, Arthur Jafa and Kehinde Wiley.

Wiley’s famed “Rumors of War” sculpture, featuring a Black rider on horseback in monumental style, will be on display in Latham Square. Thomas’ “All Power to All People” and Jafa’s “Big Wheel” are both set to be displayed at 4400 Telegraph Ave. This iteration of the tour is the first time all three sculptures will be exhibited as a group.

Wiley, who famously painted President Barack Obama’s portrait for the National Gallery, debuted “Rumors of War” in New York’sTimes Square.

Thomas’ work, titled “All Power to All People,” is a 28-foot-tall depiction of the Afro pick, a hair tool that came to be associated with Oakland’s Black Panther Party and the “Black Is Beautiful” movement. The top of the sculpture depicts the handle of the pick as a clenched Black Power fist.

Jafa’s “Big Wheel” is an expansive installation consisting of four 7-foot tires originally made for monster trucks laced with a mesh of iron chain. The work is a reflection of Jafa’s obsession with the culture of monster vehicles from his Mississippi childhood. It is also a commentary on the deindustrialization that, Jafa says, contributed to the derailing of the Black middle class. The installation also features a sound component consisting of a loop of Teddy Pendergrass ballads that emit from floor speakers.
