SFDanceworks offers a distinct aesthetic: slinky, intimate and expressionistic movement theater, in a lineage one could argue began with Martha Graham and continues today in the leading-edge work of Nederlands Dans Theater. It makes sense, then, that the company’s fifth season features recent work by Slovenia-based choreographer Edward Clug, whose ballets are also danced by NDT, alongside a lost classic by Graham herself: “Deep Song,” a passionate solo created in 1937.
This remarkably full program is also set to feature a first choreographic effort by Babatunji Johnson, star dancer with Lines Ballet; world premieres by Bay Area choreographers Laura O’Malley and Dani Rowe (on the rise after recent commissions from San Francisco Ballet); and a West Coast premiere by New York choreographer Yin Yue.
The company’s dancers — including San Francisco Ballet principal Dores André — are as mesmerizing as they come.
