Writers with Drinks: Gabby Rivera, Helen Phillips and Sarah Gailey

Since 2001, novelist and Lambda Literary Award winner Charlie Jane Anders has been hosting “Writers with Drinks,” a monthly literary variety show with a“kind of crazy, anarchic … old San Francisco”feeling.

This time, Anders plans to host six writers, including Gabby Rivera, famous for writing Marvel’s very first Latina lesbian superhero, America Chavezof the book “America Vol. 1: The Life and Times of America Chavez.” Other guests in the lineup are“The Beautiful Bureaucrat” author Helen Phillips; Hugo Awardwinner Sarah Gailey; former Stanford Humanities Centerfellow Troy Jollimore; UC Berkeley assistant English professorGrace Lavery; and Natasha Dennerstein of Nomadic Press in Oakland.

With a packed, eclectic lineup, “Writers with Drinks” promises to avoid genre restrictions in hopes of a good time. You don’t have to purchase drinks in order to attend, though $5-$20 donations will be collected forTrans Lifeline, an Oakland-based nonprofit that works as a hotline for the trans community.
