If Angel Blue has a signature operatic role, it would be Clara in “Porgy and Bess,” an assignment in which she made a splendid San Francisco Opera debut in 2009 and recently sang with the Metropolitan Opera.
But the gifted American soprano covers a wide range of operatic and song repertoire with a combination of luminous tone and expressive immediacy. In her first solo recital for Cal Performances, Blue and pianist Bryan Wagorn will offer a program that includes operatic excerpts by Strauss and Puccini, songs by Gershwin and Lee Hoiby, and arrangements of Black American spirituals.
