The third edition of Lights On Festival, a two-day celebration of R&B music headlined and curated by Grammy-winning Vallejo native H.E.R., has been canceled, less than a month before the event was to take place at the Shoreline Amphitheatre.
The festival, scheduled for Sept. 16-17, boasted a lineup including Berkeley rapper Rexx Life Raj, San Francisco born hip-hop artist Symba and Grammy-nominated “Bust Your Windows” singer Jazmine Sullivan.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Lights On Festival will not take place this year,” festival representatives said in a statement to the Chronicle on Tuesday, Aug. 22. “We sincerely appreciate and value the Lights On Festival community and look forward to returning with an incredible experience in 2024.”
Refunds will be automatically issued to ticketholders via the original method of payment once funds are received from the event organizer, a process that is usually completed within 30 days, according toLiveNation.
The five-time Grammy winning singer, born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, launched Lights On at the Concord Pavilion in 2019, with her past collaborator Daniel Caesar as well as Atlanta based R&B singer Summer Walker and Los Angeles native Jhené Aiko, among others, on the bill.
“We wanted to do something that was very inclusive of the new generation of R&B,” the artist told the Chronicle in aninterviewahead of the inaugural festival. “We wanted to do something empowering, that we own, that we can use to help other artists.”
Lights On was postponed in 2020 due to COVID precautions, and it was not held in 2022. It returned to the Concord venue, which has a capacity of 12,500, for its second edition in 2021 with Oakland natives Keyshia Cole and Goapele in addition to R&B and soul singer Erykah Badu.
This year would’ve marked the festival’s first time at the Shoreline Amphitheater, a move organizers had said was made to accommodate more attendees.
