At this year’s Portola Music Festival, fans are going to have to pick between famed Los Angeles-based producer Skrillex, Dominican rapper Tokischa and Swedish electronic outfit Little Dragon, among other tough decisions during the event’s return to San Francisco this fall.
The pop and electronic dance music festival presented by Goldenvoice, the producers behind the mega Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Southern California, plans to bring more than 60 acts to Pier 80 on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. DJs Eric Prydz and Skrillex are scheduled to headline this year’s festival, leading a stacked roster of artists including British Japanese pop sensationRina Sawayama; Labyrinth, the musician behind the score of HBO’s hit show “Euphoria”; and Canadian singer-songwriterNelly Furtado, whose anticipated performance will mark her first U.S. show since 2007.
Going into its second year, Portola had already established a grunge, underground aesthetic that stands out from other Bay Area festivals like the woodsyOutside Landsand relaxed, Wine Country-based festivalBottleRock Napa Valley. Last year’s festivalgoersdescribedPortola as “a festival for professional partiers” and “refreshingly mature yet still playful,” according to an Instagram post from the festival, which pulled testimonies from fans on Reddit.
Outside of Portola fans, however, last year’s inaugural prompted noise complaints, which organizers responded to in a letter promising to do better in the future.
Attendees are encouraged to download the festival’s mobile app to assist with schedule planning ahead of the event. Tickets for this year’s festival start at $229.95 and are available to purchase online atportolamusicfestival.com.
