By September 1992, there had been an all-encompassing hype machine accompanying the release of the first sequel, “Batman Returns,” the previous June, which only primed the pump for the impending arrival of the Batman’s new animated adaptation on Fox Kids (where it remained a weekday afternoon fixture for many years).

And it wasn’t just the unique, stylized designs that made “Batman: The Animated Series” so memorable. It was the tone and tenor of the stories, which plied to full dramatic effect the character’s tragic origin, helped along by the voice acting of Kevin Conroy, who continues to play the role (in the popular “Arkham” video games and various animated movies) and has now logged more Batman hours than any other actor. The show also brought sidekick Robin (Loren Lester) out from under Burt Ward’s shadow and lent an air of menace and tragedy to Batman’s legendary gallery of rogues that had never been attempted before and hasn’t been matched since, even in Nolan’s ballyhooed trilogy.
With memorable voice work by actors like Richard Moll (Two-Face), Adrienne Barbeau (Catwoman), Ron Perlman (Clayface), John Glover (the Riddler) and the legendary Mark Hamill (the Joker), Batman’s villains were boiled down to their most indelible forms. The jokey, one-liner-spouting Mr. Freeze whom Arnold Schwarzenegger played in 1997’s “Batman & Robin” is a sad parody of the animated Freeze, voiced by Michael Ansara, whose origin is depicted in the episode “Heart of Ice.” And if you thought Aaron Eckhart’s doomed District Attorney Harvey Dent was a tragic figure in 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” watch the show’s “Two-Face” two-parter to see where they took some of their cues.
“Batman: The Animated Series” aired on Fox until 1995 (with its second season rechristened “The Adventures of Batman & Robin”) for an impressive 85 episodes. Afterward, the show landed at the new Kids’ WB network, where a new batch of 24 episodes was commissioned under the title “The New Batman Adventures,” featuring the original voice cast but new character designs from Timm and his team. During the Fox run, it also spawned the theatrical feature “Mask of the Phantasm” in 1993, which didn’t do so well at the box office, but its strong performance on home video led to a series of DC animated movies that continues to this day.
The sustained popularity and success of “Batman” also paved the way for what’s popularly known today as the “DC Animated Universe,” a set of interconnected shows set within the larger DC Comics world. There was “Superman: The Animated Series” in 1996, the far-future spin-off “Batman Beyond” in 1999, and the culminating “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited,” which launched in 2001 and lasted until 2006.
Today, the entirety of “Batman: The Animated Series” is readily available on disc and streaming services, and thanks to a beautiful HD restoration a few years ago it remains as timeless as ever.
Though Batman has gone on to headline a variety of animated shows — several quite good — in the decades since “The Animated Series” ended, the fact that we’re still talking about the 1992 version (and likely will be for a long, long time to come) is testament to its eternal hold on an iconic character.
