'怒吼'
One of the saddest television casualties of the COVID pandemic was Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch’s wrestling sensation “GLOW.” Now, the writers are back with another darkly feminist comedy outing: an anthology series based on a short story collection by Cecelia Ahern.
Stand-alone episodes revolve around what it means to be a woman by placing characters in a variety of odd circumstances, including magical settings and futuristic dimensions. Many of the “GLOW” stars are back, including Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin, as well as Hollywood A-listers like Nicole Kidman (“Nine Perfect Strangers”) and Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”).
Ahern, who also developed “Samantha Who?,” is the executive producer.

‘Under the Banner of Heaven’
True crime fans will not want to miss this adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s amazing book. The limited series follows Andrew Garfield (“Tick, Tick … Boom!”) as a Mormon police detective who finds his faith weakening after a brutal double murder appears to involve the Church of Latter-Day Saints. The crime is linked to an extremist offshoot sect of the LDS where polygamy is still considered a sacrament, with the killers convinced they were told by God to punish their victims for interfering with the practice.
The fictionalized series appears to frame the crimes, and the history of the LDS, almost as an American folk horror story rather than a true crime drama, like a Western “Midsommar.” That’s hardly surprising considering the book that inspired the series turned out to be a terrifying read.
