Theostars smackdown.on Sunday, March 27, wasn’t the first time controversy andChris Rockwere associated with each other. In fact, it’s happened at least two other times stretching back nearly two decades.
During ABC’s telecast of the 94th Academy Awards, Rock took the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to present the best feature documentary award, which eventually would go to Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).” In his opening remarks, Rock made a joke about将史密斯wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. The actress has alopecia, a condition that leads to hair loss, and Rock (possibly ad-libbing) suggested that Pinkett-Smith was going to be in “G.I. Jane 2” — the original “G.I. Jane” starred Demi Moore as the first woman to go through Navy SEALs training, which requires candidates to shave their heads.
The camera cut to Smith, who laughed at the joke, but Pinkett-Smith rolled her eyes. The camera cut back to Rock, and Smith approached him onstage and struck him — the smack clearly picked up and amplified by the microphones.
“Will Smith just smacked the s— out of me,” a stunned Rock said to laughter from an audience who might have initially thought it was a planned skit.

During his opening monologue, Rock referred to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, in which several Black stars, including Pinkett-Smith and Smith, boycotted the Academy Awards because all the acting nominees in the four categories were white.
“Jada got mad, says she not coming, protesting,” Rock said. “I’m like, isn’t she on a TV show? Jada is going to boycott the Oscars — Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.”

In 2005, during Rock’s first Oscars-hosting gig, he went after Jude Law, implying that he was not a true star and was perhaps a second choice for producers casting their movies.

One important fact to note about Rock’s controversies over the years is that the bits that offended many were created in consultation with and approval of the producers of the Academy Awards telecasts. While, again, it is not clear whether Rock’s joke about Pinkett-Smith on Sunday night was improvised — the official Twitter account of the Oscars posted simply, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form” — it seems the producers of the Oscars telecast may have set the conditions for controversy, as they have in the past.

For comic Kathy Griffin, among many comedians and other such entertainers who have built their entire careers on making fun of others — maliciously or not — for a laugh, the incident, which did not end in Smith’s being escorted out of the awards shows, sets a bad precedent.
“Let me tell you something, it’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian,” Griffin tweeted. “Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.”

In his tearful speech, Smith apologized to the Academy and to his fellow nominees — but notably, not to Rock, who according to the Los Angeles Police Department has declined to press charges. But Smith also seemed to defend his actions, likening what he did to something his “King Richard” character, Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena, might have done.
