The series’ failure to catch on with viewers is all the more notable for its very of-the-moment approach to drawing them in. Co-creator, songwriter and star Rachel Bloom got her start making musical comedy videos on YouTube, where each new addition to the show’s songbook — more than 150 clips in all — was posted for instant gratification right after airing. The songs also made it to Spotify and Apple Music, where listeners could stream them the next day; over on Netflix, episodes were made fully available just a week or two after each season’s finale. But the added exposure never led to a ratings bump.
“Frozen” and “Moana” mania have fully revived the animated musical tradition that nearly died off during Pixar’s 2000s golden era, while the stage musical “Be More Chill,” unheralded in its 2015 regional-theater debut, became such a viral teen phenomenon online that it’s now doing a successful Broadway run.
The show’s biggest creative influence is cognitive-behavioral therapy, and its story arc is intended to function as a kind of counseling by proxy, following Bloom’s smart but troubled protagonist Rebecca as she overcomes her toxic parents, crushing workaholism and cultural messaging about how women (and romance) should be on the road to personal growth and self-acceptance.
With Millennials recently labeled the “therapy generation” amid rising rates of depression and anxiety, yet struggling to afford treatment in a broken health care system, it’s easy to picture an entertainment landscape where “Must-See CBT” takes off, with “Crazy Ex” looming large as its intellectual godparent.
(One of its leads is Skylar Astin, a main cast member in “Crazy Ex’s” final season.) Netflix’s coming “Mixtape” will offer a musical take on romance in present-day Los Angeles — in whose suburbs “Crazy Ex” is set — while Apple’s upcoming streaming service will offer “Little Voice,” a show about “the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your 20s” with songs from Grammy-nominated Broadway tunesmith Sara Bareilles.
Of course, none of that means that “Crazy Ex” is destined for immortality, especially since, unlike “Be More Chill” or its fellow teen Broadway smash “Dear Evan Hansen,” it’s centered on the struggles of a complex and often unlikable woman. (The showrunners are all too aware that sexism has been a factor in their struggles; zoom in on those valuable vintage Playbills, and you’ll notice they’re for shows titled “A Girl Can Tap-Dance” and “A Lady’s Tale.”)
But in a business that’s largely been defined by instant financial gratification, networks taking an eye to what “appreciates over time” is a very big deal for the low-rated but impactful shows of the now, and the remarkable new shows they might inspire 10 years from now. I hope all of them will be as brave, original and powerful as “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.”
