It appears that we may be on the threshold of a fairly normalsummer movie season, perhaps even a good one, in terms of movie quality.
We have the obligatory blockbusters and action movies, but even some of those arrive with a decent pedigree (“Jurassic World Dominion,” “Thor: Love and Thunder”). Could be great, could be awful. One way or the other, it should be a fun movie. It features a director, Baz Luhrmann, who’s notorious for letting his exaggerated sense of style get in the way; Austin Butler as an Elvis who, when he gyrates, doesn’t look erotic but like he’s having a seizure; and Tom Hanks wearing a fat suit as Col. Tom Parker, which will take some getting used to. But it seems to cover the whole Elvis saga — from his humble beginnings to the Vegas years, when he’d go around in a white, sequined jumpsuit that made him look like a large chicken.

Thor has been a pretty reliable franchise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the previous film, “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) was one of the funniest and most enjoyable superhero movies to date. The return of “Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi bodes well for the latest installment, which involves a newly slimmed-down Thor (he was overweight in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”) trying to adjust to peacetime.
As always, the series’ best asset is Chris Hemsworth, whose nimble comic ability is even more impressive than his superhero appearance.

‘Nope’
The latest from Jordan Peele appears to take place in a horse ranch, where supernatural forces are having a terrible effect on humans and animals. That’s about all we know, besides that it stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, and that the trailer looks ominous and contains some disturbing sights, as well as a sprinkling of dark humor.

This looks to be an entertaining action comedy, starring Brad Pitt as a genial hit man who, on assignment, boards a bullet train in Japan, only to find that he is competing with four other assassins doing a similar job for other clients.

‘Samaritan’
This is one of those movies that began filming before the pandemic, took a long break during quarantine, then restarted production. It has had a number of release dates over the course of two years, but now it’s finally coming out.
Based on a comic book series, “Samaritan” stars Sylvester Stallone as an aging superhero. That’s about all there is to know, but here’s a confusing bit of weirdness: Since February 2020, there has been a YouTube video, supposedly a trailer for “Samaritan,” that is actually a trailer for another Stallone film, “Backtrace” (2018). For the record, this is MGM’s first film set to open in movie theaters since the studio got bought out by Amazon.
