These days, the director who became known for a series of family dramas — “Eat Drink Man Woman,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “The Ice Storm,” “Brokeback Mountain” and, of course, the transcendent无套房drama “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” — is all about digital technology.
“Gemini Man,” in which a 51-year-old Will Smith battles a 21-year-old Will Smith, is Lee’s third film this decade. All three are 3-D films, and this is his second in a row, after 2016’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” filmed in a high-frame-rate technology that keeps up with these 4K times.

In “Gemini Man,” Smith is the best hit man in the world and ready to retire. But when he finds out his last job might have been an innocent man, he becomes targeted by his U.S. government minders. To kill him, they send Junior, a genetic clone of Smith who has been secretly raised by Smith’s boss (Clive Owen).
Smith plays Junior as well, his appearance digitally transformed, a process he says he struggled with.
“It was a difficult undertaking to play naivete,” Smith said during the TechCrunch panel. “Once you know something, it sits in your body. Like once you have sex, you just walk different. You have a different swagger. But to go back to your mind-set and try and remember what were your feelings or your emotions before, to go back and play youth, was a very difficult undertaking.”

Lee said there’s more to it than that. He is perpetually after what he calls “the god zone,” or “moments of movies that sort of catch the essence of our existence.”
