A big shout-out to the Bay Area fromKamala Harris!
“I’m a Bay Area gal by heart,” said the UC Santa Cruz alumna, who spoke with The Chronicle by video chat from Los Angeles ahead of the premiere of her new Apple TV+ series “Loot,” in which she plays a newly divorced billionaire.
“That was a very large exodus. Everyone that left was there for around 10 years, which was way longer than we were there,” Rudolph said. “COVID changed that a lot. I think the show being able to operate during quarantine and then post-quarantine and provide a place for us all to be able to feel some new laughter during what was a very strange time was really helpful (for the audience). And helpful for the cast to be able to come back to a place that was familiar.
Rudolph has kept her comedic chops sharp in the years since leaving the cast, and “Loot” provided her with an irresistible concept. She plays Molly Novak, the wife of a billionaire (Adam Scott), who, after her husband leaves her for a younger woman, lands a historic $87 billion divorce settlement. In the end she’s left with one question: What should she do with all that money?
“Would you use it for good? Would you spend it all and just party? What would那look like?” Rudolph asked. “And combine that with the idea of who is this woman at this stage in her life and the challenges that she’s facing feeling like, ‘How did I did I end up here, in the middle of my life, feeling middle-aged, left, divorced?’ You know, all those wonderful little blips in life that are worth examining.”
最初有很多聚会,与Joel Kim Booster(“火岛”)providing comic relief as her personal assistant while she processes her grief, but that soon gives way to reality.
That comes in the form of Sofia(麦克拉Jae Rodriguez),莫莉慈善基金会负责人。
Sensing this could fill a need in her life, Molly throws her clueless heart and soul into the foundation, much to the chagrin of the humor-free Sofia, who is from a disadvantaged background herself. First sign there’s a learning curve for Molly: showing up at the opening of an affordable housing complex in a fleet of luxury SUVs.
Series creators Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard previously worked with Rudolph on the short-lived Prime Video series “Following” and were determined to create another show around her talents.
“She can do the biggest, funniest scene where she’s eating wings that are too hot and sweating and swearing and freaking out — then literally the next scene she is revealing the vulnerability about her marriage and what she thinks about her husband, and how she doesn’t feel up to snuff compared to him.”
Yang added, “I think she’s unparalleled in terms of offering a range of comedy and drama and being able to deliver everything.”
Workers at the foundation include Molly’s nephew played by Ron Funches, straitlaced accountant Arthur (Nat Faxon) and quirky 60-something Rhonda (Meagen Fay). But the heart of the series is the deepening friendship of two very different people in Molly and Sofia — something that continued when the cameras stopped rolling.
“It made it more easy to dive into these characters and play,” Rodriguez added.
“Loot” might have a message of social activism, but it’s never preachy. As Molly travels by private jet, spars with her ex and parties in places such as Thailand and Miami, she wears some outrageously fabulous clothes — Rudolph created Molly’s look with her longtime costume designer, Kirston Mann — and attends some over-the-top parties thrown by the ultra-rich.
But Rudolph had her beat. Her best party wasn’t swanky, but nothing could surpass the star wattage.
“The 40th anniversary for ‘Saturday Night Live’ party (in 2015) was that crazy experience where all your idols are in one room,” Rudolph said. “Paul McCartney was just playing instruments and strumming next to Taylor Swift, and somebody else. Wow. Debbie Harry was there talking to the B-52’s and Elvis Costello and Bill Murray. Beyoncé and Jay-Z showed up. It was ba-na-nas.
“I will never ever forget it —更不用说那个王子了实际上是登上舞台,给了我一个拥抱,然后唱了“让我们发疯”。
“Loot”(TV-MA) premieres Friday, June 24, on Apple TV+. Subsequent episodes released Fridays through Aug. 12.
