That Mostly British and Berlin and Beyond are back seems harmonious; they were two of the last Bay Area festivals to mount full events before the pandemic, in February 2020.

After skipping a festival event in 2021, Mostly British returns to the Vogue Theatre, which is owned by the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation. The festival is a fundraiser for the organization, which recently struck an agreement with Landmark Theatres to operate the Opera Plaza Cinema.

The Mostly British festival opens with a “preview” night on Tuesday, March 8, before an official opening night and reception on Thursday, March 10. The festival runs through March 17.

Meanwhile, after scheduling some in-person events at the Vogue in May and a small-scale autumn showcase in November, Berlin and Beyond, organized by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco, is back in the Castro Theatre, its traditional home base. There will be three full days of screenings there beginning Friday, March 11, followed by evening programs at Landmark’s Aquarius Theatre in Palo Alto (March 14), Landmark’s Shattuck Cinemas in Berkeley (March 15) and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (March 16).

Both festivals faced a challenge, not only because of the pandemic — the Mostly British event was postponed from February because of the omicron variant of the coronavirus — but also because film distributors were constantly changing their release dates and availability of films.
