Hallmark’s and Lifetime’s holiday lineups not only still exist in 2020, but they are at least 200% gayer than usual. Both cable channels will premiere their first holiday films with LGBTQ leads this year. Real-life spouses Ben Lewis and Blake Lee star in Lifetime’s “The Christmas Setup,” and Jonathan Bennett (“Mean Girls”) and Brad Harder star in Hallmark’s “The Christmas House.”

Or, at least, all the people who celebrate it. Lifetime, which featured a lip lock between male supporting characters in a holiday film last year, has been the (relatively) more open-minded choice for fans of saccharine holiday films.

Whereas Lifetime for many years used the slogan “television for women,” Hallmark could bill itself with the more specific “television for Amy Coney Barrett.” Long criticized for its lack of leads of color and its crushing heteronormativity, Hallmark took heat last year for pulling TV ads for the wedding planning site Zola that featured brides kissing, after being targeted by a conservative group. Hallmark later issued an apology and reinstated the ads.

Hallmark and Lifetime have added more lead actors of color to holiday films in recent years, with Lifetime leading the way. On Dec. 13, the channel will premiere its first holiday film with a primarily Asian cast, “A Sugar & Spice Holiday.”

“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square”
