With “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” his latest project with his screenwriting partner Simon Blackwell, he’s trying something different: interpreting a classic 19th century work, in this case Charles Dickens’ “David Copperfield” — full title “The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account),” something that probably appealed to Iannucci’s sense of humor.

The good news is that while “Copperfield” may not be Iannucci’s most personal work, his engaging, inventive and visually colorful, multicultural embrace of Dickens’ old-school English world is appealing, especially if you’re not wedded to every word and twist of the original text which runs more than 350,000 words. At two hours, “David Copperfield” crams a lot of Dickens into a short amount of time, perhaps too much so. The film sometimes feels rushed, but the flip side is that it rarely drags and is often wonderfully effervescent.
