There’s a feeling of spaciousness about “Spiderhead.” Everything is light and airy, and the views of the ocean and nearby mountains create a sense of expanse. It’s only later, after having seen the movie, that it registers that the Netflix film is dialogue-heavy and takes place mostly in two rooms, and mostly between two guys.
The set design is essential. The movie is about trapped people who don’t feel that they’re trapped, and it helps that the audience agrees with them. Because the views are spectacular and the interiors inviting, it just doesn’t seem like something sinister could be going on. “Spiderhead” sneaks up on you.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”) and based on a short story by George Saunders, it’s all about an alternative prison. Steve (Chris Hemsworth) runs the place and has an open-door policy. Prisoners walk around in their own clothes and go anywhere on the premises. But in return, they live with a plastic device on their back that administers mood-altering drugs. Also, they can be recruited at any time to become subjects of an experiment.

Somehow in the past few years, Teller has gone from an eccentric juvenile to a solid leading man. As Jeff, he seems like he has secrets and that he’s a man who can handle himself. In the facility, he establishes a close bond with the cook and fellow inmate, Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), and they’re talking about getting married.
As befits a Saunders adaptation, the intention is serious, but elements are funny in a caustic sort of way. Jeff and a female inmate are put into the same room. They’re indifferent to each other, until, as if in some pharmaceutical answer to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” their bodies are flooded with aphrodisiacs. From there, the experiments get increasingly darker.
“Spiderhead” provides Hemsworth with his best showcase thus far. We can see from the Avengers and Thor movies that he’s comically adept, that he’s flexible and fast on his feet, and that he has excellent timing. But in those movies his talents are like add-ons, with the main events centering on action and special effects.
In this film, playing opposite a laconic Teller, Hemsworth has the task of driving the entire picture. As Steve, he is always selling something, always shifting gears, always gauging the other person’s responses and adjusting accordingly. He’s charming and knows it, so he works it. He’s unstoppable, playing off of people’s guilt, offering the promise of friendship or insinuating that there may be trouble and resorting to outright threats — sometimes all in the same couple of minutes. Hemsworth is so nimble that it all comes out seamless and natural.
