A new MGM+ series explores the heyday of the San Francisco rock scene, when the city gave birth to iconic acts likeGrateful Dead,Santana,Jefferson Airplane,Sly and the Family Stone, andJanis Joplin, propelling them into national fame.
The two-part docuseries titled “San Francisco Sounds: A Place in Time” is set to air on Aug. 20 and 27, and aims to capture the “creative explosion” that catalyzed a generation and solidified a national movement. It delves into the vibrant period between 1965 and 1975 when festivals such asMonterey Pop,Altamontand Woodstock put Bay Area acts in the spotlight. It also highlights the influence of the city’s concert impresarioBill Graham, who revolutionized the live music industry during the period.
Directed by Alison Ellwood and Anoosh Tertzakian, the docuseries is produced by the same team behind the Emmy-nominated “Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time,” includingAlexGibney’s Jigsaw Productions, the Kennedy/Marshall Co., Amblin Television and Jeff Pollack.
“Just like with Laurel Canyon, I personally lived through this extraordinary musical period of time and visited the San Francisco scene on a regular basis, so I’m very excited to be working again with the same amazing team we assembled to create the Laurel Canyon doc series,” Frank Marshall, executive producer of the project, said in a statement.
The documentary features never-before-seen archival material and interviews with key figures from the era. It also showcases notable bands and artists likeJourney, the Doobie Brothers, Quicksilver Messenger Service,Country Joe and the Fish,Steve Miller,Tower of Power, the Charlatans, the Great Society, Moby Grape, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Big Brother and the Holding Company.
“People think they know what theSummer of Lovewas all about, but the two-part film sheds both light and darkness on what really happened during the psychedelic renaissance,” co-directors Ellwood and Tertzakian said in a joint statement.
