“小姐。奇迹，”the latest Marvel TV show for Disney+, is the first to feature a Muslim teen girl as the protagonist. It’s also the first to pay direct and considerable homage to the Marvel fan base.

At the Markham, Ontario, arts-centric high school she attended, Vellani was on the directing and writing track. But when her aunt passed on news of Disney’s massive casting call for Kamala, Vellani felt compelled to audition. She received word she had been cast on her final day of high school.

Vellani “has some of that inherent bubbly charm the character has from the comics, but also has some artistry and some maturity to her and can handle all this,” Ali said, alluding to the demands of playing a Marvel heroine. “It’s a big life change, a big jump.”

“Beyond the fact that I could see somebody like myself represented, and people I recognized as my own family and my extended family presented in a kind and compassionate way, it’s just a beautiful piece of work,” Ali said. “The writing is really clever and smart, and the artwork is intricate and textured and layered.”

But the show’s heart lives in Kamala’s relationships with her immigrant parents (Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur) and older brother (Saagar Shaikh). Particularly Kamala’s interactions with her mom, who leans toward overprotectiveness and urges her daughter away from the fantastical bent that runs in their family and has led to trouble in the past.

Her show’s writers’ room even held a “Homecoming” poster. “It is a good way in for a character like this” for viewers, Ali said. “We are showing so many different elements of her, and what is really recognizable and beloved is that ‘Homecoming’ energy.”
