There are several weeks of spacefaring adventures to come before titular bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his pint-size sidekick the Child (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) wrap up the season, but let’s take a moment to acknowledge some of the iconic “Star Wars” callbacks the show lovingly nested within its narrative.

It’s funny to think of Luke Skywalker’s words all the way back in 1977’s “Episode IV — A New Hope” when he protested, “If there’s a bright center to the universe, you’re on the planet that it’s farthest from,” as he described the desert planet he had lived on since being left there as an infant. Decades later, Tatooine has been central to so much “Star Wars” storytelling, spanning five of the original six films, and now two episodes of “The Mandalorian.”
While season one’s “The Gunslinger” took us back to the infamous Mos Eisley cantina — and even showed us the bar stall where Han Solo (Harrison Ford) dispatched bounty hunter Greedo — the season two premiere, titled “The Marshal,” gave us an even better return to the fictional planet. Not only do we see the infamous Tusken Raiders and get a window into their culture (they’re much more than the grunting savages shown in previous films), we also get our first look at a living, breathing Krayt Dragon, the massive creature whose skeleton C-3PO wanders past in the first film, and whose horrific yell is imitated by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) just before we are introduced to him.

Not only does her inclusion in “The Mandalorian” fit seamlessly with the show’s unfolding plot, it also signals clearly that the animated shows deserve just as much recognition as the films, making them required viewing for anyone looking for a complete “Star Wars” experience.
