The 30-year-old writer-director established his reputation as a daring and wise-beyond-his-years filmmaker attuned to the tense undercurrents in families with his first two movies: his indie breakout“克里希纳”(2016)和“它在晚上来了”(2017年),作为恐怖轻弹的家庭戏剧重新循环。
“One thing that’s key to me about this movie is that it’s about love,” Shults said during a recent visit to San Francisco with “Waves”’ co-starsHarrison(who drew raves earlier this year for his performance in“劳乌斯”)和Newcomer Taylor Russell,两位25人在涡旋中扮演南佛罗里达州的兄弟姐妹。
The message that love trumps hate, that we’d all be better off, as family members and as citizens, if we defaulted to acceptance and forgiveness instead of judgment, suffuses nearly every scene in his emotionally wrenching, largely autobiographical third film that he calls “without a doubt by far the most personal thing I’ve ever made.”
It’s a telling statement, considering Shults cast his aunt as the lead in “Krisha” and shot the film in his mother’s home.
甚至在好莱坞,很少有人听说过“波” when it premiered in August at the Telluride Film Festival. Shults introduced the film, which he said had been “gestating for 10 years, and which I put so much of myself into,” at its first screening while fighting back tears at the mike.
Shults, who, like the fictional Tyler, was injured as a high school wrestler, said it’s hard to pinpoint a single inspiration behind “Waves,” but that it drew on “feelings, lots and lots of feelings, and memories. A lot of what happens to Tyler actually happened to me, or people I know or my loved ones.”
He sent the first draft of “Waves” to Harrison, who appeared in “It Comes at Night.” As the filmmaker and actor opened up to each other about the family dynamics and pressures they each felt growing up, Shults, who is white, said the fictional Tyler became a kind of hybrid of each of their adolescent selves, and race took on a more central role.
“We talked about my relationship with my dad, my sister, my romantic relationships, trying to put in little things that would make it easier for me to dive in,” said Harrison, who was a talented high school trumpet player in New Orleans. “Tyler’s dad in a lot of ways reminds me of my dad (professional jazz musician Kelvin Harrison Sr.) and this obligation to be great, to service the legacy a father wants to leave. What does that do to Tyler in return? What’s the toll of having expectations thrust on him from previous generations?”
One of the film’s standout scenes is a father-daughter conversation toward the end while Russell and Brown are fishing together on a lakeside bench and trying to reclaim some closeness.
“Waves” (R) opens Friday, Nov. 22, in Bay Area theaters.
