Here’s hoping this news update will be far in the future; the 82-year-old filmmaker said in a recent interview he has the genes to live past 100, and he’s planning on it. But there is no doubt that the landmark film, widely considered among the greatest ever made, and its two sequels, will always be Coppola’s defining legacy.

There aren’t many Hollywood directors who will willingly risk home and property to make a film, but Coppola has done that time and time again — and he’s doing it now: He and wife Eleanor Coppola recently sold their winery, Inglenook in Napa Valley, to fund his $120 million passion project “Megalopolis,” which is currently in preproduction.

Coppola, flush with success after the first “Godfather,” which won Oscars for best picture, actor (Marlon Brando) and the Coppola-Puzo screenplay, had his pick of big-budget projects in Hollywood. Instead, he chose to head back to the Bay Area and Zoetrope for the low-budget “The Conversation,” which made a modest $4.4 million against a $1.4 million budget.

It’s likely that the gargantuan Vietnam War epic “Apocalypse Now” — a long-dormant Zoetrope project — wouldn’t have been made without Coppola’s “Godfather” success (in the late ’60s, Coppola and co-writer John Milius conceived of shooting “Apocalypse Now” on location in Vietnamduring the war)。谁知道20世纪70年代后期会在20世纪70年代后期制造的“教父”斗牛席?

But he likely would have arrived at the ill-fated American Zoetrope musical “One From the Heart” — a long-dreamed-of project — no matter what. The notoriously expensive 1982 bomb caused Coppola — who had put up the winery, which he had purchased in 1975 with his “Godfather” loot — to be in hock to Chase Bank for a decade.

The conventional wisdom is that Coppola spent that time working for hire to pay off his debt, but that is only partially true (see: “The Cotton Club” and the great “Peggy Sue Got Married”). In reality, Coppola was still pursuing his own passion projects: The S.E. Hinton collaborations “The Outsiders” (suggested to Coppola by an elementary school teacher in Fresno) and “Rumble Fish”; and a long-dormant Zoetrope project, “Tucker: The Man and His Dream,” co-produced by Lucas.

Eleanor, Francis’ wife of 59 years (they met on the set of “Dementia 13”), confirmed that she signed off on the Inglenook sale during a Q&A with a Berkeley Art Museum audience on Saturday, Feb. 19, after a Pacific Film Archive screening of her 1991 documentary “Hearts of Darkness,” a must-watch look at her husband at work in the Philippines as the filming of “Apocalypse Now” was coming apart at the seams.
