The stars — celebrity and celestial — come out for the 43rd Mill Valley Film Festival
‘The Boys Who Said No!’
奥斯卡提名的纪录片武器朱迪思Ehrlich(美国最危险的人:Daniel Ellsberg和五角大楼“)回归另一张越南战争抵抗,这次专注于抗议军事草案。
The movement, which began in 1967, was rooted in Oakland, where resistance leader David Harris and his then-wife, folk singer and activistJoan Baez, were based. Both appear in the film, as does Ellsberg, 89, a Berkeley resident.
The virtual screening on Oct. 8 marks the film’s world premiere.
Screens virtually 6 p.m. Oct. 8 through 11:59 p.m. Oct. 14.
‘The Comeback Trail’
This writer ranks “Midnight Run” (1988) as one of the funniest movies of all time. It’s certainly Robert De Niro’s finest comic performance. The writer of that film, George Gallo, writes and directs here, casting De Niro as a bottom-feeding Hollywood producer circa 1974, who is in deep to a loan shark (Morgan Freeman). With his life threatened, the producer devises a scheme to repay his debt by making a western with his producing partner (Zach Braff) and killing off the film’s has-been star (Tommy Lee Jones) in a stunt gone awry.
Shades of “The Producers” and even “City Slickers” to a degree, “The Comeback Trail” is no “Midnight Run,” but it has enough star power, laughs and a ’70s vibe to carry it over the finish line.
7:30 p.m. Oct. 12. Lagoon Park Marin Center drive-in.
'帝国反击战'
The perfect family drive-in film screens for its 40th anniversary at this year’s festival.
Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) are at their zenith, and of course, this the film that introduces Yoda, perhaps the “Star Wars” universe’s most beloved character, as well as Mandalorian bounty hunter Boba Fett.
Fun fact: The worldwide box-office champ of 1980 also topped the U.S. box office chartsthisyear — in June, when the pandemic closed theaters and, in the absence of new releases, classics ruled America’s drive-ins.
7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Lagoon Park Marin Center drive-in.
‘The Father’
This heartrending look at dementia is one of the best films of the year featuring one of the greatest performances of Anthony Hopkins’ career (a high bar indeed) and equally stunning work by Olivia Colman.
What makes “The Father” different from other films about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is that director Florian Zeller, adapting his own play, attempts to show what its like tohavedementia, as well as its effect on his put-upon daughter. Hopkins is living in daughter Colman’s London flat, to the irritation of her husband (or does she have a husband?), and Colman has trouble finding a professional to help care for him as she may or may not be weighing a move to Paris.
It’s really a time travel movie — from the point of view of Hopkins’ addled and shifting timeline.
轧机山谷的两种筛查都售罄,但它将至少在12月份获得释放。不要错过它。
‘Los Hermanos/The Brothers’
湾区导演肯·施奈德和玛西娅Jarmel have a pretty amazing story to tell: Two brothers born in Cuba to a musical family are separated as teens when one has a chance to study the violin in Russia. Eventually, he relocates to New York and establishes a classical string quartet.
另一个兄弟在哈瓦那留下来,成为一位成熟的钢琴家,演奏了一个独特的古巴音乐风格。分开了几十年,兄弟们被允许在美国 - 古巴联系的奥巴马时代解冻期间第一次一起玩。
A remarkable film about a family ensnared in geopolitics and two brothers who lead very different lives and yet never lose their instinctual connection.
几乎从晚上12点01点到上午12点到11:5910月18日星期日。
‘Never Too Late: The Doc Severinsen Story’
Not only is Johnny Carson’s former bandleader alive and well, but he can still blow a mean trumpet. He’s in his 90s and indefatigable in this toe-tapping documentary by Kevin S. Bright and Jeff Consiglio.
“Never Too Late” traces Severinsen’s journey from small-town Oregon to New York and “The Tonight Show,” including the move with Carson to the West Coast. But it’s more than a show business documentary. Severinsen opens up about alcoholism in his early life, his relationship with his children and powerhouse workout routine that keeps him fit and thinking young.
Also appearing are current “Tonight Show” bandleader Questlove, and former regular Carson guests David Steinberg, Martin Mull and many others.
几乎从晚上12点01点到上午12点到11:59Oct. 18.
‘One Night in Miami’
Centerpiece spotlight on Regina King
The MVFF43 Centerpiece Spotlight is on Regina King, who won her first Oscar last year (supporting actress for “If Beale Street Could Talk”) and her fourth Emmy last month (lead actress in a limited series for HBO’s “Watchmen”). In her compelling directorial debut, the film is about a night in Miami in 1964 in which Cassius Clay (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir ), NFL star and later movie star Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) and singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) gather in a motel room hours after Clay, soon to become Muhammad Ali, captured the heavyweight boxing title by beating Sonny Liston.
The men are on different paths in the waning years of the Jim Crow era. As rising Black role models, do they advocate assimilation, and the compromises that come with that, or revolution?
Kemp Powers, the co-director and co-writer of Pixar’s upcoming “Soul,” adapted his own play, which was based on a real event, though fictionalized. King’s direction within confined spaces — most of the film is set in that motel room — is expert.
Screens virtually from 6 p.m. Oct. 13 through 6 p.m. Oct. 16.
‘Public Trust’
There are so many environmental issues that the selling of public lands doesn’t register much on the national radar. But there has been a decades-long effort among pro-business groups to appropriate government land for development and, often, for drilling and mining by fossil fuel industries.
This Robert Redford executive-produced documentary looks at the battle to keep land from Alaska to Minnesota in public hands. It’s a movement that is often led by Native American activists.
Gorgeous photography is featured in this film, which exposes the way politicians surreptitiously attach laws in spending bills that pave the way for the sell-off of land.
Screens virtually from 12:01 a.m. Oct. 8 through 11:59 p.m. Oct. 18.
‘Weed & Wine’
This intriguing documentary is about two agricultural families who have been tilling the land for generations. The Thibon family are winemakers in the Southern Rhone region in France; the Jodreys are cannabis farmers in Humboldt County who are suddenly legal. Very different industries, and very different family vibes, and yet many common threads: Both are concerned with issues of sustainability and climate change, and both delicately calibrate their businesses to reflect ever-changing industries.
Rebecca Richman Cohen is both an Emmy-winning filmmaker and a lecturer at Harvard Law School. She tells a compelling story with warmth and intimacy.
