Immediately after史密斯将被拍打克里斯摇滚during the Oscars ceremony on Sunday, March 27, social media pundits rightly predicted that hot takes would flood in.
W. Kamau Bellcaptured the mood with characteristic pith and the perfect GIF.

The unscripted slap followed a joke Rock made about the shaved head of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who, as has been widely reported, suffers from alopecia, which disproportionately affects Black women.
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, among the executive producers of the short documentary“The Queen of Basketball,”which won an Oscar that night, and San Francisco Arts Commission Director of Cultural AffairsRalph Remingtonwere some of those who expressed concern that the slap would taint what should have been a career high for Smith, who, after more than three decades as a Hollywood star, won his first Academy Award for his performance in“King Richard.”
Like everybody..I’m still in shock about the whole thing- but in all the unnecessary drama, at least we got the line of the night from Denzel…”In your highest moments, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you!”

West Philly takes its second Oscar of the evening. However it's tainted by his physical onstage assault of Chris Rock. Such a shame.#奥卡斯pic.twitter.com/pa2xis2emd.

For Oakland playwright, poet, novelist and activistJewelle Gomez,
Indeed, during Smith’s acceptance speech he said, “Love makes you do crazy things,” a cliche that did not sit well with many viewers.
Michael D. Tubbs, the former mayor of Stockton, noted that Smith’s celebrity means that many viewers, especially younger ones, will probably interpret the actor’s behavior as worthy of emulation.

The ability to entertain doesn't make someone a role model or a leader. We'd do better if we would remind ourselves that. Model yourselves after behavior not talent.

Bell predicted, humorously, that the pearl-clutching Academy would revert to its longstanding embarrassing practice of nominating only white actors in all categories. San Francisco actor and San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company co-founder Rodney Earl Jackson Jr. noted that white America’s fair-weather fondness for Black artists instantly evaporates the moment that love can no longer be simple. And Hakeem Jefferson, an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University, posted a thread about how the incident plays into his own research on respectability politics.

Everybody loves Black Culture…until it gets “complicated”

I know we’re all still processing, but the way casual violence was normalized tonight by a collective national audience will have consequences that we can’t even fathom in the moment.#oscars2022
