Too Short to host Bay Area hip-hop 50th anniversary bash

The San Francisco event will be hosted by Chuy Gomez and Sway and feature break-dancing demonstrations, graffiti artists, DJ sets and more.

Oakland rapperToo Shortis set to host a Bay Area hip-hop 50th anniversary celebration.

The event, organized by the independent San Francisco record labelEmpire, is scheduled to take place at SVN West on Oct. 15. It will feature break-dancing demonstrations, graffiti artists, local vendors and DJ sets. Among the local turntablists performing at the San Francisco event are Steady, Cream of Beat, Big Von, Scotty Fox and others.

Bay Area radio personalitiesJesus “Chuy” GomezandSway Callowayare slated to cohost.

Empire “will uplift and honor every aspect of Bay Area Hip Hop culture,” organizers boast, noting they expect around 1,000 attendees.

Too Short, whose real name is Todd Anthony Shaw,built his reputation on raunchy, sinister rhymesand a string of platinum and gold albums in the ’80s and ’90s. With such classics as “Don’t Fight the Feelin’ ” and “Blow the Whistle,” he’s had albums that charted on Billboard in each of the past five decades.

In 2020, Too Short joined forces with West Coast rap icons E-40, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube to form the supergroupMount Westmoreand performed at the 2022BottleRock Napa Valley festival.

A stretch of Oakland’s Foothill Boulevard was renamedToo $hort Wayby city officials last year.

Gomez and Calloway both DJ’d for the Bay Area-based network California Music Channel, better known as CMC, and were longtime on-air personalities at KMEL, the popular hip-hop and R&B radio station. Calloway, a former MTV personality, currently hosts “Sway in the Morning” on SiriusXM.
