Bay Area concerts in fall 2023: 13 must-see shows

From rock legend Bruce Springsteen to history-making newcomer Peso Pluma, don’t miss these fall concerts in the Bay Area.

As the crisp winds and cloudy skies usher in the fall, the Bay Area’s stacked lineup of concerts offers local music lovers plenty of opportunities to catch some warmth in a crowd.

While there are a number of festivals dotted around the bay — including Pier 80’sPortola Music Festival, which is slated to feature famed Los Angeles DJ Skrillex and Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, andHardly Strictly Bluegrasswith folktronica artist Beth Orton and Texas-born blues artist Buffalo Nichols on the lineup — there’s an even broader variety of solo headlining shows scheduled over the next few months.

From formerOutside Lands performers the 1975to first-time Bay Area performer Jai Paul, here are some of the best shows to catch this fall.

King Krule

In June 2023, nearly 10 years after the release of his debut album, “6 Feet Beneath the Moon,” London-based King Krule released his fourth album under the pseudonym, titled “Space Heavy.” This fall, the alternative artist is set to play a show at Oakland’s Fox Theater as part of his current world tour in support of the record.

In the spotlight since he was a teenager, Krule has proved year after year that he has only gotten better with time. From his flock of devoted fans who take to Reddit to dissect the minuscule details of his sets to his growing audience of casual listeners, the widespread admiration of the grungy British artist is undeniable.

Kali Uchis

Colombian American singer and TikTok sensation Kali Uchis has extended her “Red Moon in Venus” tour with a string of fall dates, including one night in Oakland. Named after her 2023 album, the tour marks the singer’s first headlining arena dates, and she already has teased a third installment.

Dominican rapper Tokischa, who is also scheduled to perform atPortola Music Festivalduring the last weekend of September, joins as the supporting act. Over the past few years, the provocative performer has collaborated with Rosalía, J Balvin and Madonna.

The 1975

Just in case you didn’t get enough of Outside Lands headliners the1975, the British band is heading back to the Bay Area for its “The 1975 Still … at their very best” tour. Frontman Matty Healy has become notorious for his unpredictable and at times out-of-pocket behavior during shows, from kissing fans in the front row to launching into mid-show rants. You never know what you’ll hear or see at a 1975 show. You’ll just have to wait and see.

Jai Paul

Musician Jai Paul will perform in San Francisco for the first time on Sept. 29.

After years of elusiveness, R&B/pop artist Jai Paul has scheduled a handful of live shows this fall, including a solo show at the Regency Ballroom on Sept. 29 ahead of hisPortola Music Festivalperformance the next day.

In 2013 his debut album, “Bait Ones,” was leaked online and, despite the album receiving critical acclaim, the incident ultimately led him to take a six-year hiatus from music production. He returned in 2019, officially releasing the same album, retitled “Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones).”

Jai Paul made his live performance debut at Coachella earlier this year and has slowly been getting comfortable with stepping back into the spotlight. His September shows will mark his first performances in the Bay Area.

Peso Pluma

Peso Pluma is bringing his “Doble P” tour to San Jose in October, riding the high of his newfound fame.

The 24-year-old Mexican artist has made waves over the past few years, drumming up mainstream exposure for his corridos, a traditional form of musical storytelling, and collaborating with a number of artists, including Bizarrap and Becky G, whom he joined onstage during Coachella earlier this year.

Pluma’s collaboration with Eslabon Armado, “Ella Baila Sola,” made history as the first regional Mexican song to reach the top five on the all-genre Billboard chart earlier this year, and was deemed in late August to be the global song of the summer by Spotify. With his current tour, Pluma is proving that regional Mexican music can in fact be global.

SZA

SZA. who played Outside Lands Festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in 2022, is set to perform at Chase Center Oct. 26.

After a sold-out Oakland show in March,SZAis bringing her SOS tour back to the Bay Area. The R&B singer, who dropped her long-awaited 23-track sophomore record last December, is scheduled to embark on the second round of her U.S. tour in late September, and is expected to perform at the Chase Center on Oct. 26.

The artist’s spring show, which featured tightly choreographed dances and massive shipwreck set components, was mesmerizing. Only time will tell if the second iteration of shows will alter or outshine the initial production.

Doja Cat

Doja Cat is set to kick off her “Scarlet” tour at the Chase Center on Halloween, fitting timing for the upcoming album, which was recently teased with spooky visuals of the singer covered in fake blood and getting cozy with the Grim Reaper.

The artist has alluded that her new musical era will be more rap-centric than her previous projects, and has trickled out two singles off the project, each with edgy, bloody music videos. She has even had the artwork of her previous albums and singles altered on streaming services to have a red tint, keeping on theme.

Specifics of the album are still under wraps, but given that the Chase Center crowd will be the first to witness the production she has planned, you won’t want to miss it.

Raye

Raye is set to perform in Oakland on Nov. 3.

After touring with Kali Uchis and SZA earlier this year, the singer-songwriter will embark on her “My 21st Century Blues” tour in September.

Her debut album of the same name was released in February, but the R&B singer has been working in the industry since she was 17, penning hits for stars such as Charli XCX and Beyoncé, and being tied to a stagnant label deal with Polydor for years. Now an independent artist, she is set to bring her show to the Fox Theater on Nov. 3, and has already spent the summer playing a string of festivals in preparation.

Ms. Lauryn Hill

25周年的庆祝她的独奏debut album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” the hip-hop legend is hitting the stage and reuniting with her band the Fugees to co-headline her U.S. and Canada tour dates.

Hill is scheduled to bring the show toOakland Arenaon Nov. 7, her first Bay Area show since 2018, when she last toured for the 20th anniversary of the album. A Fugees reunion had been in the works since 2021, but was postponed to 2022 and later canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

Despite the hardships, the trio has reunited a couple of times over the past few years, most recently to sing a slew of their hits at the end of Hill’s headlining set at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic earlier this summer.

Their Oakland show is the only Bay Area performance scheduled on the tour — don’t miss out on the milestone celebration and epic reunion.

The Japanese House

Signed to Dirty Hit, the same label that backs the 1975 and Beabadoobee, Amber Bain, professionally known as the Japanese House, released her sophomore album “In the End It Always Does” at the end of June, four years after her debut. Boasting credits from the 1975’s Matty Healy, Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” and “Evermore” co-writer and producer Justin Vernon, and pop-rock band Muna, the album is a haze of raspy vocals and dreamy production.

Bain is bringing the Japanese House to San Francisco’s Fillmore on Nov. 21, with folk artist Quinnie set to open. With the last Japanese House tour ending just before the onset of the pandemic, and having played just a handful of festivals since, Bain’s upcoming tour marks her proper return to the stage.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen is set to close out his 2023 tour with longtime tour mates the E Street Band at Chase Center on Dec. 10 and 12, marking his first Bay Area performances since 2016.

The “Dancing in the Dark” singer has been touring across Europe and the U.S. since February, with set lists that rely on classics like “Born to Run” to “The Promised Land.” Despite facing a number of medical issues during the tour, Springsteen has bounced back time and time again, and is bound to put on an electrifying holiday season performance.

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks is set to perform at Chase Center Dec. 15.

Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks is heading to Northern California for two dreamy performances — Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center on Dec. 12 and San Francisco’s Chase Center on Dec. 15. Both stops were initially scheduled for March, butpostponeddue to COVID-19 illness within her band.

Nicks is no stranger to theBay Area, having moved to California as a teenager and attending San Jose State University. Even after skyrocketing to fame as part of Fleetwood Mac in the ’70s, her heart still lies with the Bay Area.

“That’s where it all started,” she toldthe Chronicle. “It’s where I belong. It’s been years since I lived there, but to this day it still feels like home.”

Anita Baker

Anita Baker is scheduled to perform in Oakland on Dec. 23.

R&B artist Anita Baker is slated to close out her first national tour since 1995 in Oakland at the tail end of the year. The 15-stop tour celebrates the 40th anniversary of Baker’s 1983 debut album “The Songstress,” which included soulful hits “No More Tears” and “Angel.”

The Grammy winner recently dropped slow-jam superstar Babyface from the tour, after claiming she experienced cyberbullying from his fan base. She has since continued the tour without an opening act. Baker’s current string of shows mark the first time she has been able to perform the hits for which she recently regained the master rights.
