Oakland’s historic amusement park,Children’s Fairyland, is set to play host to an eclectic after-hours music festival this fall.
Curated bySpellling, the experimental music project of Bay Area producer Chrystia Cabral, in collaboration with travel website Atlas Obscura, the event promises a blend of avant-garde, experimental and genre-pushing performances.
Dubbed“Through the Looking Glass”and scheduled for Sept. 16, the outdoor event boasts a diverse lineup of talented artists, including the psychedelic jazz ensembleSun Ra Arkestra, led by 99-year-old Marshall Allen. Joining them is Los Angeles electro-indie-rockerSasami, alongside the Australian musician and professional whistlerMolly Lewis.
The festival will also feature Bay Area improviser and conductorZachary James Watkins, a Mills College alum; 80-year-old Philadelphia multi-instrumentalistLaraaji; Los Angeles harpist and composerNailah Hunter; and the Ugandan recording artistAroMa.
“Join us for a transcendent evening filled with magic and wonder, featuring avant-garde, experimental, and genre-pushing musicians and artists from the Bay Area and beyond,” the festival website says.

Organizers anticipate a turnout of about 1,200 attendees.
The exclusive announcement of the lineup on Wednesday, Aug. 2, coinciding with the release of Spellling’s latest single and video, “Hard To Please (Reprise),” from her forthcoming album, “Spellling & the Mystery School,” due out Aug. 25 on the Brooklyn-based label Sacred Bones.
Following the festivities at Children’s Fairyland, Spellling plans to embark on a mini-tour, stopping in cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore.
