It’s been five decades since the glitter-encrusted, gender-bending performance troupe thet在旧金山旧宫殿剧院的舞台上爆发,永远改变阻力和戏剧习俗。
Now a new cabaret tribute to the Cockettes plans to focus on one of the most enduring parts of their legacy: the original music that gave those performances their shape and vitality.
“We’re revamping and reshaping the material in a way that hopefully makes it surprising even to people who know these songs and the shows they come out of,” said director Noah Haydon. “But we’re also hopefully showing that even if you don’t know about the Cockettes, the music can stand on its own.”
the same songs (“Ain’t We Deluxe,” “Jaded Lady,” “A Crab on Uranus Means You’re in Love,” “Shanghai”) from the previous show, but scales back the cast, choreography and production values to be more appropriate for the intimacy of cabaret.
Other original Cockettes may appear in the show.
卡尔科斯卡说:“ the the the the of我只在'旧金山'中都打一个按钮。” John Watersand Divine, and all the ways they influenced each other back and forth.
“I always thought these songs could work in something more like a ‘Side by Side by Sondheim’ revue,” said Koldewyn. “That way people wouldn’t feel the pressure to do the elaborate costumes or makeup. Some of those trappings could deter people from feeling able to do a production. I think you can evoke the entire spirit of the Cockettes just with the songs.”
Haydon originally became familiar with the work of the Cockettes when he appeared in a 2012 revival of “Pearls Over Shanghai,” directed by Russell Blackwood for the Thrillpeddlers. For him, the combination of the framework of the script and songs with the freewheeling spirit of the Cockettes encouraged him to experiment as a performer, including appearing in drag for the first time.
在复兴以来的十年,一些原来的公司ckettes material that deals with cultural depictions and race has been re-evaluated. Haydon and Koldewyn have worked to eliminate outdated and potentially problematic terminology or sentiment. Koldewyn says the intent of the Cockettes was not to mock other cultures. In “Pearls,” he said, it was the overwrought, exoticized films of Josef von Sternberg from the 1930s and ’40s that were the show’s target, not Shanghai itself or Chinese people.
“Many of the songs I wrote to be in the vein of those kinds of American standards,” said Koldewyn. “When we took the Cockettes to New York in the ’70s, some of the critics even said ‘Well, they just did American standards,’ but it was my music. They were maybe trying to be dismissive, but now it proves that point.”
All three of its creators would like this new show to tour to other cities with large queer communities, mentioning
