In honor of their upcoming appearance on the final date for this year’sStern Grove Festivalthis weekend, the city of San Francisco plans to pay tribute to the psychedelic rock bandthe Flaming Lips.
Mayor London Breed is set to bestow a special proclamation upon the Oklahoma-based group, designating Sunday, Aug. 20, “The Flaming Lips Day” in acknowledgment of the band’s distinctive connection to the Bay Area.
Festival Executive Director Bob Fiedler said in a statement that they particularly wanted to recognize “the band’s profound impact on our city’s cultural tapestry through their creative expression, psychedelic performances, and indelible influence that has enriched our history and shaped our vibrant artistic landscape.”
Having played their first concert ever outside their home state at theI-Beam Clubon Haight Street in 1985, the Flaming Lips have woven San Francisco into their musical history. They played a free show in Union Square in 1995, did their famousboom box experimentconcert at Bimbo’s 365 Club in 1998 and headlined the Noise Pop Festival’s 20th anniversary in 2012, among many other shows throughout the city.
“We’ve had many shared moments in this city, and we feel grateful to be a part of the creative and eclectic fabric of the San Francisco music scene that makes this city so special,” said frontmanWayne Coynein a statement.
Bringing the 2023 Stern Grove Festival season to a close this Sunday, the Flaming Lips are set to headline the free outdoor series’ annual fundraising party known as the Big Picnic.

Festival organizers plan to release a limited quantity of free ticket reservations each day — available on a first-come, first-served basis — leading up to the concert viawww.sterngrove.org. Additionally, reserved picnic tables for groups of up to 10 guests, are also available for purchase starting at $5,000 by emailing bigpicnic@sterngrove.org.
