Green Dayhas canceled an upcoming concert in Moscow scheduled for this spring in the wake ofRussia‘s invasion of Ukraine.
“With heavy hearts, in light of current events we feel it is necessary to cancel our upcoming show in Moscow at Spartak Stadium,” the East Bay rock band wrote in anInstagramstory posted on Sunday, Feb. 27.
“We are aware that this moment is not about stadium rock shows, it’s much bigger than that,” Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool said in the joint statement. “But we also know that rock and roll is forever and we feel confident there will be a time and a place for us to return in the future.”
Refunds are available at the point of purchase.
The concert at the 45,000-capacity venue in Moscow was set to take place on May 29 ahead of Green Day’s European tour in June.
The East Bay band is among the first major artists to announce they would no longer perform in Russia, followingever-growing international condemnation of its violent invasion of Ukraine.
The United Nations human rights chief said at least 102 civilians have been killed and hundreds wounded, while warning that figure was probably a vast undercount. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least 16 children are among the dead.
