LJames Blakeis an introvert who has made a big impact on the world outside. The British musician effectively shifted the sound of the pop charts with the release of his self-titled debut album in 2011, bringing warped beats, distant falsettos and slowly unraveling melodies into fashion as he reconciled his deep-rooted feelings of loneliness and silence.
Blake’s fourth album, “Assume Form,” is no less intimate, but now he finds himself working with an incredible support system. After years of lending his special brand of melancholy to countless rap hits, the party moves to his place. His latest release prominently features guest spots by mainstream acts such as Travis Scott and trap producer Metro Boomin, who help him sex up “Mile High”; and Outkast’s André 3000, who gives a surreal bounce to “Where’s The Catch?” The pulse quickens, relatively, to accommodate withBlakeembracing skittering rhythms and vivid harmonies.
Inspired by his recent move to sunny Los Angeles and blossoming relationship with “The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil, the album finds the 30-year-old singer-songwriter offering his cautious take on classic love songs via “Can’t Believe the Way We Flow” and “Into the Red.”
While his sense of sonic adventure remains – as does the underlying darkness – Blake also appears ready to surface. In “Power On,” he sings, “I thought you were second place to every song / I was wrong.”
