Janelle Monáepowered through a bout of food poisoning to put on an electrifying performance on the Lands End stage during the final day of Outside Lands.
For a few tense moments before her 4:40 p.m. set time on Sunday, Aug. 12, rumors circulated that Monáe wouldn’t perform at all. But the singer came out with all cylinders firing, singing and dancing through dynamic renditions of her hits such as “Make Me Feel,” “Pynk” and “Electric Lady,” throwing in a brief nod to her idol Michael Jackson — the late brother, of course, to Sunday’s headliner, Janet Jackson.
The singer admitted that she threw up shortly before taking the stage, but the massive crowd on the Polo Field would’ve otherwise been oblivious.
Monáe closed out her energetic set with a blistering version of “Tightrope,” showing no signs of a sour stomach.
