Janelle Monáe, the Grammy-nominated singer and actor, is giving their Bay Area fans a rare opportunity for an intimate encounter this week.
The artist, who publicly identified as nonbinary last year, is set to celebrate the release of their latest album, "The Age of Pleasure," with a specialalbum signing eventat Amoeba Music at 1855 Haight St. in San Francisco on Tuesday, June 13. Monáe plans to sign copies of the release and pose for photos with attendees beginning at 3:30 p.m., with alimited number of wristbandsavailable to people who purchase the new album in advance.
Space is limited for the album signing event, with each person restricted to two albums and two wristbands.
Over the weekend, Monáe performed songs from the new album ontheir own floatat the Pride Parade in Los Angeles and emphasized the need for activism in the face of awave of legislationacross the U.S. curbing the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
“We celebrate all that we are from all different walks of life. We protect each other. We use our privilege to protect those who don’t have any. We use our voice. We use and exercise our right to vote to protect our trans family!” theytold the crowd. “We protect Black folks here. We protect brown and Black. All of us protect each other. We love each other and we create safe spaces for each other, ’cause there’s no pleasure without safety.”
“The Age of Pleasure,” featuring the single “Lipstick Lover,” was released Friday, June 9. The singer plans to kick off a 26-city tour on Aug. 30 in Seattle, with aBay Area stopat the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on Oct. 17.
Monáe also plans to return for this year’sOutside Lands, the three-day outdoor festival at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, on Aug. 11.
