It’s always been hard to say goodbye to Kate Wolf.
The plan is to end the festival on a high note after two pandemic-induced postponements. Though, even before the advent of COVID the event’s producers, Bill Graham Presents veterans Danny Scher and Bob Barsotti, and Cloud Moss, who also produced the Sebastopol Celtic Festival for many years, were thinking about the endgame.
This year’s far-ranging lineup includes blues great Taj Mahal, Gullah jazz masters Ranky Tanky with special guest Lisa Fischer, roots rockers Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore with the Guilty Ones, and close Wolf associates Cris Williamson, Tom Paxton and Nina Gerber, a prolific accompanist who got her start backing Wolf. She’s returning to the festival for the first time in more than a decade.
“We’re not getting younger, and we feel like it’s time for younger people to take up the torch,” Moss said. “If someone came along and convinced us that they should take over, we’d listen.”
The event has sparked countless musical connections and collaborations over the years, while also inspiring a distinct Wolf-centric set of musical rituals. Another Wolf confidant, gravel-voiced singer-songwriter Greg Brown, was a regular in the festival’s early years and is coming out of retirement to bid the event adieu.
Feeling euphoric after his 1997 performance with Gerber, Brown “went home that night and wrote ‘Kate’s Guitar’ for Nina,” Moss recalled. The song became an unofficial festival anthem and will undoubtedly be part of Gerber’s set list. She’s playing in several settings, including backing bluegrass greats Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick.
“我很荣幸在我问的位置ed to close and sing the encore,” said Foster, who plans to be back in the Bay Area next month for shows at Hopmonk Tavern (July 29), Felton Music Hall (July 30) and the SFJazz Center (July 31). “The music will go on. That’s what’s going to make this particular weekend special. I truly believe that all the love and all the years this has been going on goes into the ether. Put it into the trees and leave it there for people to know that something really special happened at this spot.”
