Following the success of its sold-out inaugural event last year, theMill Valley Music Festivalis expanding to two days with a lineup heavy on homegrown talent, organizers announced Tuesday, Jan. 24.
San Francisco rock and soul hitmakersMichael Franti & Spearheadand the Sacramento alt-rock actCakeare slated to headline the all-ages music festival, presented by San Francisco-based Noise Pop Industries and the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, on May 13-14. It will again take place at Friends Field in Mill Valley.
The festival bill also includes the high-energy New Orleans R&B and soul groupTank and the Bangas; former Talking Heads bassist Jerry Harrison and touring guitarist Adrian Belew performing music from Talking Heads’ 1980 album “Remain In Light”; the Seattle soul ensemble the Dip; retro-soul act Durand Jones; Southern soul revivalists Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears; Grammy-nominated singer-songwriterValerie June; Oakland psych-rock act Orchestra Gold; and Mill Valley student band the Alive.
Organizers hope to draw live-music fans from across the country to the outdoor concert as a way to boost traffic to surrounding businesses in the leafy Marin County hamlet. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will go to a number of local organizations, including the Mill Valley Schools Community Foundation.
Two-day passes, priced from $219 for general admission to $449 for VIP access, go on sale at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
“With a commitment to creativity, our team worked its tail off to create something new and exciting in this town we love,” said Jim Welte, director of the Mill Valley Chamber, in a statement. “Overwhelmed by the massive response from our neighbors and Bay Area friends, I knew our team had to really raise the bar for 2023 and we couldn’t be more proud of how this year’s lineup came together.”
