With Outside Lands returning to its traditional spot on the Bay Area concert calendar, it can only mean one thing: It’s officially Fogust.
“It’s going to be a seasonable August weekend for the Outside Lands,” said Gerry Díaz, The Chronicle’sin-house newsroom meteorologist, who’s part of a new weather team dedicated to covering the science behind the Bay Area’s weather and microclimates.
Festivalgoers arriving when gates open at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Golden Gate Park can expect a gloomy start to the three-day outdoor musicalevent, with temperatures hovering at 57 to 59 degrees, as marine clouds scrape the park for the first couple of hours.
“This tends to be the foggiest time of the year in San Francisco, especially in mornings and evenings, thanks to the large temperature contrast between the cool Pacific air to our west and the hotter air farther inland,” Diaz explained. “Golden Gate Park happens to be in the direct path of the cool, moist marine air this time of year.”

But don’t give up on the summer in San Francisco just yet.
By Friday afternoon, a building high pressure system to the east of the Bay Area will actively compress the marine clouds back to the coast,迪亚兹解释一下d, rapidly making way for a sunny and warm respite, where temperatures are expected to reach up to 70 degrees while opening acts like Oakland experimental pop singer Spelling, New York soul musician Cory Henry and genre-bending the Blssm take to the festival stages.
“Friday is looking to be the warmest day out of the bunch to check out Outside Lands,” Díaz said of the weekend-long festival, which ends Sunday, Aug. 7. “But every afternoon this weekend is looking pretty great for festival attendees — just be ready to deal with cool and misty mornings if you plan on getting there early, and chilly evenings if you stick around through the end of the festival each night.”
That means attendees should come prepared with layers, from waterproof jackets and flannels to beanies and maybe even a pair of gloves as temperatures fluctuate, as the sea breeze, which will funnel 10 to 15 mph winds into the park, will carry marine clouds back ashore later each day, bringing with them mist and fog.
Díaz said festival goers can expect temperatures to fall to 55 to 57 degrees by closing time with headliners SZA,Green Dayand Post Malone.
“Fortunately, we don’t expect it to rain on the festival this weekend,” he said, “but we can’t rule out the chance of some early morning drizzle.”
