Former Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell in hospice care as health issues worsen

Harwell has been receiving treatment for the final stages of liver failure, according to media reports.

Former Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell, whoretired from the San Jose band2021年由于医疗问题,在临终关怀care, the band’s manager said Sunday.

“Steve is resting at home and being cared for by his fiancé and hospice care,” manager Robert Hayes said in an email. “Although Steve is here with us still, sadly it will only be for a short time.”

Harwell has been receiving treatment for the final stages of liver failure, according to media reports. Eight years ago, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease that affects the heart and motor functions.

Smash Mouth was formed in San Jose in the mid-1990s and catapulted to worldwide fame when several of its songs were included in the “Shrek” movie soundtrack. The band is best known for hits such as “All Star,” “I’m a Believer” and “Walking on The Sun.”

Harwell made headlines in late 2020 after aperformanceat the Big Sip festival in upstate New York in which the singer appeared to slur his words, threaten audience members andmake vulgar gestures, including what some on social media characterized as a Nazi-style salute.

Following the performance, Harwell abruptly departed the band and wasreplaced by a new singer.

Following his departure from the band,Harwell issued a statement saying, “I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues, and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn’t able to. … I cannot wait to see what Smash Mouth accomplishes next and am looking forward to counting myself as one of the band’s newest fans.”

Hayes, who called Harwell “one of the most recognizable voices” of his generation, asked fans to respect the singer and his family’s privacy “during this difficult time.”
