His yearlong run at New York’s Walter Kerr Theater has come to a close, butBruce Springsteenhas the perfect souvenir for his fans. The new double album “Springsteen on Broadway” and its accompanyingNetflix documentarypreserve the thrills of the mostly one-man show based on the Boss’ 2016 memoir, “Born to Run.”
A mix of compelling storytelling, acting and live performance, it could very well be Springsteen’s most candid work to date. By way of introduction, the 69-year-old New Jersey native tells his audience, “Standing before you is a man who has become wildly and absurdly successful writing about something of which he had absolutely no experience. I made it all up.”
He spends the next two-plus hours stripping away and playing up that myth he spent the past five decades building. Along the way, he reconfigures beloved songs like “Born to Run,” “Thunder Road” and “Dancing in the Dark” with raw, bluesy acoustic arrangements, exploring the circumstances that color each one.
It’s such a treat that even if you’re not a Springsteen fan, you can understand why people mortgaged their homes for tickets to the show.
