“Frozen,” “Jagged Little Pill” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” are coming to San Francisco inBroadwaySF’s2022-23 season, the presenter of touring Broadway shows at the Orpheum Theatre andGolden Gate Theatreannounced Thursday, April 14.
The season — which is heavy on recognizable names and properties — opens with “Jagged Little Pill” (Oct. 11-Nov. 6), based on the era-defining Alanis Morissette album from 1995 that has achieved the rare “double diamond” status in sales. Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, who brought out whimsy, idiosyncrasy and joy in“Waitress”and“Finding Neverland,”directs.
Next up is the story that launched countless ice princess imitators and karaoke renditions of “Let It Go,” in Disney’s “Frozen” (Nov. 18-Dec. 30), followed by “Beetlejuice” (Dec. 7-31), based on the 1988 Tim Burton film starring Michael Keaton.
And 2023 brings“Dear Evan Hansen”(Jan. 24-Feb. 19), theSteven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul musical about a troubled adolescent who worms his way into a dead classmate’s family under false pretenses. The Tony-winning showplayed at the Curranin 2018, prior to itspoorly received film adaptationin 2021 starringBen Platt, who originated the role on Broadway.
“Mean Girls” (Jan. 31-Feb. 26), which is based on the iconic Lindsay Lohan 2004 teen flick and has a bookby “Saturday Night Live” alum Tina Fey, comes next, after having been postponed and rescheduled multiple times because of the pandemic. That run is followed by “Six” (Feb. 21-April 9), a musical about the wives of King Henry VIII. It was written by Brits Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, who, in “Six,” have already had a show on London’s West End and on Broadway before they turned 30 years old.
“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” (Aug. 1-27) wraps up the season with a biographical musical about the Tennessee native who became the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall wrote the book, and theater and film director Phyllida Lloyd (“The Iron Lady,” “Mamma Mia!”) directs.
