In Yussef El Guindi’s play, which opened Tuesday, April 5, at MTC, a decades-long marriage unravels in a single day, a single conversation, a single incident, after Paul criticizes Jean for wearing a bikini to the pool in a culture where that might not be appropriate.

Yet a single incident is anything but in El Guindi’s sharp, yet expansive, writing. A remark is a pressure point wired to a nerve center, a hairline fracture in eons of tectonic pressure that cracks all the way to the core.

Perhaps you find it difficult to care about another rich white couple whose marriage is on the rocks. Perhaps you’re not overly fond of plays that never met a minor incident they couldn’t monologue their way out of. In “Hotter Than Egypt,” you might well add to these quibbles a feeling that Paul’s too easy to write off as chauvinist, narcissist, racist and gaslighter who spills macro- and microaggressions wherever he treads, despite Stetler’s canny efforts to undercut those qualities with an eternal I’m-a-good-guy smile.
